Un model 3D al creierului uman oferă avan­taje pentru studiul bolilor neurologice

Cercetătorii de la Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) au creat un model tridimensional al ţesutului cerebral care integrează toate cele şase tipuri principale de celule ale creierului, inclusiv neuroni şi celule gliale. Acest model permite o investigare personalizată a afecţiunilor neurologice şi medicamente mai eficiente.

Modelele, numite „miBrains”, sunt obţinute din celule stem pluripotente induse prelevate de la donatori umani, fiind personalizabile genetic şi de dimensiunea unei monede de 50 de bani. Ele reproduc interacţiunile complexe dintre celulele creierului şi includ componente vasculare, precum o barieră hemato-encefalică funcţională.

„Complexitatea şi flexibilitatea sistemului miBrain permit explorarea şi personalizarea nelimitată a studiilor asupra creierului.. Putem adapta fiecare model la genomul unui individ, ceea ce aduce medicina personalizată cu un pas mai aproape de realitate”, a declarat Alice Stanton, coordonator principal al studiului, potrivit ziaruldeiasi.ro. Aceasta a fost publicată în revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Un prim test important a vizat gena APOE4, asociată cu boala Alzheimer, dezvăluind modificări la nivelul interacţiunilor celulare şi creşteri ale proteinelor patogene. Rezultatele confirmă potenţialul acestor modele de a reduce dependenţa de studiile pe animale şi de a accelera descoperirea de terapii noi.
